Building a Successful Web Presence

Imagine a huge party full of your customers, biggest fans, competitors, and worst enemies. Not only is everyone mingling and making introductions, but at the front of the room is a podium with an open microphone.

This is the beauty of the internet.  Companies that are late to the party, or worse, don’t show up at all, endure the humiliation of watching their brand dragged through the mud and their customers enticed away by competitors. Do yourself a favor, actively and passionately building a strong web presence.

Here’s how to get started.

Content is King

Content is substance. Regardless of the design, technology, or platform, content refers to everything that conveys meaning. Obviously this includes the text on your pages, but it also encompasses pictures, videos, buttons, icons, logos, PDF's, etc. Content is the substance that provides value to your audience. In a nutshell, content strategy requires the vision to anticipate and provide exactly what your audience is looking for.

Most sites remain fallow and unused due to a poor content strategy. Or more appropriately, no content strategy. The best way to kill good content is to bury it in a mountain of useless information. Most projects are delayed weeks, months, or even years by late content.

Who are you? Who, Who, Who Who?

Who Are You? Pretend that I don't know who you are or what you do. Hopefully, you've got a quick (less than 1 minute) synopsis prepared. However, chances are, if we asked the people working with you down the hall, they would give us a completely different answer. In many organizations, it doesn't take much digging to find committed people who can't explain or explain correctly why their organization exists.

Help us out. It doesn't matter if we are a first time visitor or a fully employed vision-setting staff member, it is critical that we understand and can reiterate the vision, mission, and values of the organization. It can't just be formal, empty rhetoric. It must resonate with our souls.

Hello, My Name is…

A giant hurdle where many organizations stumble is assuming they understand their audience and know what they are looking for. We’ve all been to websites with horrible navigation, sites that make you hunt through menus and links to find the information you’re after. All too often this isn’t related to a complex design or mountains of important data – it’s because the somebody decided it was more important to be “cool” and use non-descriptive text and navigation that doesn’t have any context to a end user.

7 Deadly Sins of Church Websites

I’ve spent quite a bit of time consulting with non-profits and church organizations. It’s amazing to me seeing the same mistakes repeated over and over. It’s time to stop! Here are the 7 deadly sins of church websites. Confession and repentance are required.

Behind the Scenes of the New 454 Creative Website

Our office has been looking forward to this day for quite some time. Since our move to Orange in October we’ve been hard at work on 454 Creative. Todays launch of the new 454 website also serves as the launch of our new branding. Now that we’re up and running you can expect blog posts on a more consistent basis (we promise).

In my 454 Creative Blog debut I’m going to give a quick overview of some of the tools that were used in the making of the new 454 Creative website.
